The Environment, Safety, Health, and Quanity Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for a Waste Management Specialist (WMS) position within the Waste Acceptance and Waste Disposition Team of the Transportation and Waste Management Division (TWMD).

The radiological WMS will become a subject matter expert for most aspects of radioactive waste management.
The WMS is responsible for independently solving a variety of complex technical problems related to radiological waste management and other technical projects supported by the TWMD.
Professional experience includes familiarity with the requirements of radiological characterization, regulatory-compliance, packaging, Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements, Nevada Nuclear Security Site (NNSS) disposal, Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) requirements and audit support.
The primary function of the WMS position is to assist the ORNL waste generators with the characterization of ORNL radioactive waste Major Duties/
Responsibilities:
The WMS provides support to Radiological Engineering Support and Waste Acceptance team leaders in performing certification documentation reviews to determine if documentation meets applicable WAC requirements of the designated TSDF.
Major duties and responsibilities supporting WCPP are as follows:
Assist team leaders in waste acceptance and certification reviews and waste profile development.
As subject matter expert (SME), provide technical support to generators and WSRs.
Oversee and request completion of package certification inspection checklists.
Develop waste management tools and technical position papers.
Participate in the DQO process.
Conduct container and item V&V activities.
Provide expert technical direction as an ORNL Subject Matter Expert for the characterization and disposition of all ORNL Hazardous, low level, mixed, and PCB Radioactive waste(s) generated by nuclear accelerators, nuclear reactors, isotope production, radiochemical research, irradiated nuclear fuel testing, irradiated metal interrogation, environmental cleanup, laboratory analysis, and biological research.
Develop characterization techniques to support characterization and packaging of high activity radioactive waste while balancing impacts of ALARA, DOT criteria and facility limitations.
Develop technical position papers in the areas of waste management.
Perform regulatory reviews of documentation for compliance.
Develop waste management procedures and spreadsheet application tools.
Assist with treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDF) interface.
Support external and internal audits and assessments of the waste management program.
Lead multiple characterization projects simultaneously.
May guide and mentor assistant staff members performing Waste Management Specialist functions.
Qualifications Required:
A BS Degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the waste management field with a knowledge of waste characterization and certification or a minimum of 8 to 10 years of in-depth experience from another DOE sites or from commercial waste disposal companies within their waste wanagement facility.
Equivalent experience and education will be considered for this position.
Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, WORD, and waste management software applications.
Experience with the review and application of laboratory analysis to characterize the radioactive and chemical constituents of waste.
Experience characterizing hazardous and radioactive waste with several sources of radioactive contamination.
Must be capable of obtaining a DOE Q clearance.
Proficient in application of standard workplace personal computer applications Qualifications Preferred:
Bachelor degree in environmental sciences or engineering.
Waste management experience at a DOE site.
Extensive experience with waste management software application.
Extensive experience with sample-based waste characterization.
Experience in characterizing radioactive waste that is generated by nuclear accelerators, nuclear reactors, hot cell facilities, and chemical separation processes.

Q clearance:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy.
As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position.
WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
