Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a communications specialist, focused primarily on internal communications, to support ORNL's national security sciences missions.
You will support all facets of internal/employee communications for more than 500 researchers, technical professionals, and analysts.
Collaborating daily with your communications colleagues and operational support staff, you will advise leadership on effective employee communications strategies and produce materials to engage and inspire the staff who deliver science-based solutions to critical national security challenges.
The ideal candidate will possess experience across a range of communications disciplines, including writing, web content, events, and development of communications products.
The National Security Sciences Directorate is rapidly advancing the science of resilience, security, and analytics to solve critical challenges in nuclear security, cybersecurity, and human security.
Our world-leading researchers engage in collaboration across the laboratory -- in areas such as nuclear and chemical sciences, applied materials, advanced manufacturing, biosecurity, transportation, and supercomputing -- to protect the nation today while identifying and addressing future threats.
Major Duties/Responsibilities Collaborate with colleagues in communications, human resources, finance, and more to provide timely, informative, and engaging internal communications products in support of ORNL's national security sciences mission.
Create content for and implement improvements to internal communications processes and platforms, including staff highlights, recognition and awards, and cascading management communications.
Establish and maintain an internal website (e.
g.
, SharePoint or WordPress) to improve directorate communications and information sharing.
Organize and support regular events and activities to increase engagement among leadership and staff.
Interact with colleagues across ORNL to ensure clear, concise, and consistent messaging across products and channels.
Understand and write about science and technology-related national security research and programs, which may also be disseminated to external audiences.
Strengthen internal and external branding through consistent messaging across platforms and by applying ORNL styles and standards to internal and external communications products.
Abide by Safe Conduct of Research principles, including being personally responsible for ensuring safe operations by raising safety concerns, exhibiting a questioning attitude, considering hazards for every task, and never ceasing to learn.
Basic
Qualifications:
Minimum of a bachelor's degree, preferably in communications, English, public relations, or a related field.
At least 5 years of experience in communications-related positions.
Experience planning, coordinating, and implementing effective internal/employee communications campaigns.
Excellent written and oral communications skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in web content development and maintenance.
Creativity, attention to detail, and a desire to collaborate.
Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
Ability to work both independently and with all levels of staff in a team-based environment.
May require the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.
Preferred
Qualifications:
Experience working with senior leaders and the confidence to fulfill urgent requests in a timely and professional manner.
Experience organizing employee events.
Ability to develop, update, and maintain informative and compelling website content, adhering to a consistent schedule to keep information fresh.
Ability to support communications projects from concept to completion within deadlines and in collaboration with other team members.
Experience with Drupal, WordPress, SharePoint, or other content management systems.
The ability to balance multiple demands and perform professionally and capably under pressure.
Previous experience with DOE or other government agencies.
